c1899 - 1937

James Sadler was founded in 1882, and is one of the leading manufacturers of teapots in the UK. The early Sadler teapots were "Brown Betty" style, tall and shaped more like a coffee pot with possibly a marking found on the bottom. For a Sadler teapot made between 1899 and 1937, there will be an impressed mark that reads "ENGLAND JSSB."

c1937+

For a Sadler teapot made after 1937, there could be an impressed or printed mark that reads "SADLER BURSLEM ENGLAND."

It all began with James Sadler, who built a factor in Burslem at the heart of the ceramic industry in Stoke-on-Trent, and made a name for himself by making fine earthenware teapots. He soon became famous, and a James Sadler teapot became synonymous with quality and good taste.

Embossed - c1937+

c1937- 47+

The handwritten numbers on the bases, usually have more to do with the patterns, rather than any date of manufacture. There are many variations of this particular banner or ribbon backstamp.

c1950s - c1995

"SOPHIE CHINTZ" gets its name from James Sadler's sister Sophie. This beautiful pattern dates back to the early 1900's.

This teapot is full of color with its yellow background and a floral pattern on top. Pattern was used on Sadler teapots since 1950, and discontinued in 2002. You can find many variation of Sophie Chintz backstamps through those eras

c1995 to present day -

The base of this teapot carries the blue Windsor backstamp along with the embossed 'Sadler' which is identical in style to the Sadler ribbon backstamp. The same cube shaped and other popular patterns were designed under the Windsor banner. I understand that Sadler produced the teapots for the Co-op Wholesale Society of Stoke-in-Trent to sell under the Windsor banner.
